Restorative Dentistry

Dental Crowns and Bridges in Vile Parle East, Mumbai.

A crown or bridge rarely comes as a surprise. By the time a patient is sitting in the chair talking about one, there's usually been a root canal, a crack, or a missing tooth in the picture for a while. What does sometimes come as a surprise is how different the outcome can look and feel depending on the material chosen and how carefully the restoration is planned and fitted.

At Designer Smiles in Vile Parle East, crown and bridge work is handled by a team with over 30 years of restorative experience under Dr. Kavita Bhat Kumar's oversight. The focus at every stage is on a restoration that fits correctly, bites correctly, and looks like it belongs, because a crown that ticks all three of those boxes is one you'll stop thinking about within a few days of it being placed.

01 / Crown

What Is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown, sometimes called a cap, is a custom-made cover placed over an existing tooth to restore its shape, strength, and appearance. It fits over the entire visible portion of the tooth above the gum line, protecting what's underneath from further damage while restoring full chewing function.

Crowns are most commonly needed in these situations: after root canal therapy, when the treated tooth becomes more brittle and needs structural protection; when a tooth is cracked, heavily decayed, or broken in a way that a filling can't adequately repair; when an existing large filling has failed or the tooth around it has weakened significantly; and for cosmetic purposes when a tooth's shape or colour can't be corrected by other means.

02 / Bridge

What Is a Dental Bridge?

A dental bridge replaces one or more missing teeth by anchoring a prosthetic tooth (or teeth) to the natural teeth on either side of the gap. Those neighboring teeth are prepared and crowned, with the replacement tooth suspended between them, literally bridging the space.

A bridge is a fixed restoration, it's cemented in place and not removable. It restores the ability to chew and speak normally, prevents neighboring teeth from drifting into the gap over time, and maintains the overall structure of the bite.

The trade-off compared to a dental implant is that a bridge requires the permanent preparation of two healthy neighboring teeth to support it. If those neighboring teeth are already in good condition and don't need crowns for any other reason, this is a consideration worth discussing with Dr. Kavita before deciding between the two options.

03 / Materials

Which Crown Material Is Right for You?

Zirconia Crowns. Zirconia has become the most commonly recommended material for both front and back teeth because it combines genuine strength with a natural appearance. It's metal-free, biocompatible (no risk of metal allergies), and resists staining well over time. Layered zirconia, which has a slightly more translucent appearance, is often chosen for front teeth where the light-reflecting quality of natural enamel matters most. Full contour zirconia is preferred for back teeth where chewing strength is the priority.

Ceramic or All-Ceramic Crowns. Metal-free and highly aesthetic, all-ceramic crowns, including varieties made from lithium disilicate, are a strong choice for front teeth. They offer excellent translucency and colour-matching but are generally not recommended for molars that bear the heaviest biting forces.

Porcelain Fused to Metal (PFM). PFM crowns have a metal inner structure with a porcelain coating over it. They're durable and have been used successfully for decades, but the metal margin can sometimes become visible at the gum line over time, and they don't carry the same natural light-transmission as all-ceramic or zirconia. They remain a practical option in some cases.

The right material for your crown or bridge depends on the location of the tooth, your bite, and your specific clinical situation. Dr. Kavita's team will advise on the best option for your case at the consultation.

04 / Process

How Crown and Bridge Treatment Works at Designer Smiles

  1. Consultation and Assessment. A clinical examination and X-rays confirm the condition of the tooth or teeth involved and the most appropriate type of restoration. For bridge cases, the condition of the neighboring teeth used as anchor teeth is carefully assessed before any preparation begins.
  2. Tooth Preparation. The tooth receiving a crown is gently shaped to create space for the crown to sit over it without adding bulk to the bite. For a bridge, the anchor teeth on either side of the gap are prepared in the same way. Local anesthesia is used throughout, the preparation is painless.
  3. Impressions. Precise impressions of the prepared tooth or teeth are taken. These are sent to the lab where your crown or bridge is custom-fabricated. A temporary crown or bridge is placed to protect the prepared tooth in the meantime.
  4. Fabrication and Fitting. At the second visit, the temporary is removed and the permanent restoration is checked for fit, shade, and bite before being permanently cemented. Adjustments are made until the fit and bite are correct before anything is fixed in place.
  5. Aftercare. Most patients adapt to a new crown or bridge within a day or two. Mild sensitivity immediately after cementation is normal. A follow-up confirms the bite is settled and the restoration is functioning well.

05 / Choosing

Crown, Bridge, or Implant: Which Is the Right Option?

This is one of the most common questions in restorative dentistry, and it's worth answering clearly before a patient commits to a treatment.

A crown is for an existing tooth that's still present but damaged. It doesn't replace a missing tooth, it restores and protects what's there.

A bridge replaces a missing tooth using the neighboring teeth as anchors. It's suitable where those neighboring teeth are already compromised or need crowns independently, or where an implant isn't appropriate for clinical reasons.

A dental implant replaces a missing tooth with a standalone restoration anchored in the jawbone, without affecting neighboring teeth. For a patient with healthy neighboring teeth and adequate bone, an implant is usually the recommendation that preserves the most of what's already there.

None of these is universally better than the others. The right choice depends on your specific clinical situation, which is exactly what a consultation is designed to determine.

06 / Your Visit

Your Experience at Designer Smiles

Crown and bridge preparation is carried out under local anesthesia in a private operatory, with clear communication at each step. The visits tend to be longer than a routine check-up, but the process itself is comfortable and predictable once the anesthesia takes effect. At Designer Smiles, the same aftercare ritual follows these visits as any other: relaxing music throughout and afterward a warm towel and a short neck and face massage, the small touches that make a longer appointment a noticeably different experience.
